16-23: An Ideal Husband

Explain the perception you have of Rochester at this point in the story. Do you like him or not? Why do you like him or would you want him to change? Use evidence to support your statement.

  1. I have mixed emotions about Rochester at this point of the novel. At different parts of the novel we seem to see two opposite sides of Rochester much like the two sides of a coin. He seems to be secretive and possessing a mysterious past that nobody knows of besides himself and the people involved. For instances in Chapter 20 when he ask for Jane's help to stop the bleeding of Mason, yet Jane knows nothing about Mason and he knows nothing about her. Although there are a few instances in the novel when it seems as though Rochester might show his true color. Such as in chapter 17 when as he was saying good bye to Jane it almost slips out as "good night my love", which shows that Rochester does have feelings for Jane and wants them to be together. However in chapter 23 Rochester uses jealousy in order to make sure that Jane loved him back, which by no stretch of the imagination is proper way to go about finding out if someone loves you back. At the end of chapter 23 when the lightning strikes the chestnut tree it could be a sign from God that Jane and Rochester should not be together. I just do not how I feel about Rochester; his past is too much of a x-factor for me to completely like or hate him yet.

  2. I completely agree with Matt. I think that this is Jane's first "relationship" or encounter with a male. Rochester is the only male besides Mr. Brockelhurst ( which doesn't really count because she was a small child and he was a grown man who ridiculed her infront of the entire school) while Jane has had in her life. Therefore I think she doesn't have much to compare in the sense of how a guy should treat her. I think Rochester is very immature in his way of handling things. He seems very sketchy to me because he dressed in disguise as the gipsy and because he never disciplined Grave pool and even pays her more than anyone else when he knows she tried to kill him. Also flaunting Ingram around with in is very childish to me and as Matt said, not the right way to go about things. I the that if Jane had more experience with men she wouldn't like him as much as she does now. She fell in love with him very quickly. I do not like Rochester very much however like and love story I kind of hope they end up getting married and having a family.
