1-15 – Let’s Get Gothic

How do the opening chapters represent themes, topics, and elements of Gothic Literature?

  1. Gothic presents itself in the first couple chapters within how Jane is displayed to be a helpless victim, imprisoned in the manchion and how she tends to feel lonely. Being bullied, and sent away to an orphanage school.

  2. The first appearance of gothic elements present themselves in the red room in which Jane is locked for her misbehavior. The red-room is dark like blood and emits an eerie vibe. Though it is by all means a beautiful room, Jane feels uncomfortable in it and begins hearing a voice calling to her—she speculates it is the voice of her late uncle who died in that very room. Also during her stay, it rains for some time further intensifying the already creepy mood. All of these elements, dark room where an instance of death occurred, the color red, ghosts, and the gothic scene of rain on the moors, are all examples of classic gothic elements.
